Ireland’s Ancient East is geared to maximise the history and heritage in the region and bring it to greater international attention. To do this, the new initiative will offer visitors a personal experience of 5000 years of history through a relaxing journey of discovery in the beautiful landscape that attracted warring settlers for millennia and illuminated by stories from the best storytellers in the world – the local people.

Our Ireland’s Ancient East journey begins with Carrickmacross Lace. Many brides have chosen Carrickmacross Lace for their big day. The story behind this lace is as much about ragged rural poverty as royalty romance. The romance of the craft triumphs through the exquisite work – lace brooches to wedding veils.

Patrick Kavanagh Centre offers a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the Irish poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh in Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan.

Carrickmacross Workhouse, Co. Monaghan, was built in 1841, along with 130 others throughout Ireland, to house the poor; hence the Irish name of Teach na mBocht - The Poorhouse.
